"A Time For Everything"
by Rev. Jan Seward
'24/7' seems to sum up what has replaced dedicating a day to rest and spiritual contemplation. The expectation is that everyone and everything should be available all the time. Could
the result of this on-demand culture be that we have lost touch with the gift of rest?
In our fast-paced lifestyles, the 'always on' mentality has
become the model for success and we have come to regard rest as a necessary inconvenience.
Several years ago, country singer, Dolly Parton penned and performed the very popular hit song titled 'Workin' 9 To 5'
. Some of its most endearing and hard-hitting lyrics are in its chorus ….
"What a way to make a livin'
Barely gettin' by
It's all takin' and no givin'
They just use your mind
And they never give you credit
It's enough to drive you crazy
If you let it…..
Workin' 9 to 5…."
The whole reason for the 'Labor Day' holiday is to rest from our labors; to reflect on God and to have that cleansing and renewing of the Divine come through us in a very special and holy way.
After all, even God rested! "So God blessed the seventh day and hallowed it, because on it God rested from all the work that he had done in creation." (Genesis 2:3)
There really is an ebb and a flow to life….a 'time to work' and a 'time to rest from work'. Just like the ocean has a low tide and a high tide, so our lives have that same rhythm.
"There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven:" (Ecclesiastes 3:1)
I invite you to consider setting aside at least one day of the week to resting and nurturing your soul in the deepest way. It will transform the quality of your life.
