I Am Not Lost, I Am Exploring
By Robin Volker

The other day, as I pulled onto Hwy 23 from our subdivision, I looked out over the Olentangy River; there were two beautiful red-tailed hawks circling high above the water.   The Red-tail became one of my animal totems when we moved from Georgia to Texas.  I was heart-broken to leave my home in Georgia, my work, my friends and family.   As we traveled west, I realized that I often spotted a red-tail hawk along the roadway, sitting on pole, a power line, or flying in the sky.   Hawks are one the most intriguing birds of prey.  They have sharp vision, powerful flight, and strong hunting abilities.   It is a good omen for a person setting out on a journey, especially one that is not undertaken with joy, to take with her the energy of the Red-tail.

To tell you all the characteristics of the Red-tail Hawk as a totem animal would take far too long.  One of the best descriptions of animal totems is the book, "Animal Speak," by Ted Andrews.   Ted writes, "The sky is the realm of the hawk.  Through its flight it communicates with humans and with the great creator spirit.  It awakens our vision and inspires us to a creative life purpose."   These words inspire me, especially if life isn't going the way I would like for it to go.

That day, as I looked up at those two hawks having a playful time on the wind's updrafts, my CD player was playing Jan Stanfield's song, "I Am Not Lost, I Am Exploring."  Her words ring to true…

If I could look down on this path I walk
From somewhere way up high,
I could see the crooked road that I have come.
I walked a mile with sorrow.
I walked a mile with joy.
And now I'm less afraid of either one.
For every tear I've cried, there's a smile that I have earned.
For every mile I walk, there's a lesson I learn.

CHORUS:
I'm not lost, I am exploring.
Life is an adventure worth enjoying.
Though I may not know where I'm going.
I am not lost.  I am exploring.
I am not lost.  I am exploring.

The hawk is never lost.   Every flight is an adventure worth enjoying.   Even when we don't know where we are going, if we can just remember to awaken to our vision and be inspired to our creative purpose, we, too, will not be lost, but only EXPLORING!
