Dear Unity Friends,
The Greek philosopher, Epictetus, said, "we are disturbed not
by what happens to us, but by our thoughts about what happens." I have recently been studying the impact that "our
story" has on our lives. You know "your story" don't you? It is that series of thoughts you think over and over about yourself or
others that causes you pain and suffering. "My husband betrayed me." "My father abandoned me." "I'm not smart
enough." "I have cancer." How would you like to rewrite your story? Are you willing to consider the possibilities of letting it
go in order to find a deeper experience of happiness and fulfillment? The wise teachers of our time tell us "suffering is optional."
Behind every stressful or negative feeling we experience is a specific thought causing this reaction
in us, whether we are conscious of it or not. The way to end our stress is to investigate the thinking behind the story we are telling ourselves.
About 20 years ago, a woman named Byron Katie ( www.thework.com) had a personal break-through at a moment when she had a breakdown. Through her own self-development, she created what she
calls, "The Work." The Work is a simple yet powerful process of inquiry that teaches how to
identify and question thoughts that cause all the suffering in the world. It's a way to understand
what's hurting you, and to address your problems with clarity. People who do The Work as an ongoing practice report life-changing results.
We don't have to give up our story; we only have to have the courage to inquire "Is it true?" "Do we
absolutely know it is true?" Jesus told his followers, "And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." (John 8:32) Join us
this Sunday and be willing to awaken to your freedom. Namaste` Rev. Robin |
