Hello Unity Friends,

Namaste is a Hindi and Nepali word that is often times used in the context of yoga practice.  It is usually used as a greeting or goodbye and taken as an expression of goodwill.  It is often used together with a hand gesture and a bow to the person you are greeting or to whom you are bidding goodbye.  The gesture used when bowing in Namaste is the bringing of the hands together at your heart center, palms touching.  Postures of the hands are called mudras.  In this posture, one hand represents the higher, spiritual nature, while the other hand represents the worldly self.  By combining the two hands in this way, you are expressing your intention to rise above differences with the other person and to connect with the person you are bowing to or saluting.  The bow itself is symbolic of love and respect.

Common western translations of Namaste are

  • The Spirit in me meets the Spirit in you,
  • I greet that place where you and I are one,
  • I salute the Light of life in you,
  • I receive the free Spirit,
  • The life in me honors the life in you.

In Unity, we say, The Christ in me greets the Christ in you.

Namaste recognizes the equality of all, honors the sacredness within each of us, and reminds us of the interconnection that creates our oneness.  My Valentine wish for you can be summed up in one word, "Namaste."

Love,
Robin
