Author Gill Farrer-Hill writes in A Gift of Positive Thinking, "There is a process of rebirth between each moment of our lives. Make the most of each moment before it is reborn in another."
We are reminded that our focus is not to lie in the past or in the future. We know of the past and we can guess about the future. Our focus is to lie with the moment, right here, right now; it is only in this moment
that we have any control and effectiveness. Staying focused on this present moment helps us live our lives skillfully, deliberately, and purposely.
As we look upon each morning as our rebirth into a new
day, we can exercise our free will and choose how to live the gift of this day. Recognizing the new opportunity before us, we set aside grievances of the past; we can remove judgment against others; we can allow
ourselves to feel inspired to act compassionately and kindly.
With this new day we can choose to see our mind as calm and still, where we can cultivate positive thoughts and initiate actions from a
conscious state of awareness. We can choose to respond to others with deliberate discernment and thoughtful consideration as opposed to reacting blindly and unskillfully. Through our awareness of rebirth, each new
moment and each new day becomes a part of the continuum of our lives, building from one thought to the next, one moment to the next, one day to the next.
Tomorrow morning when you first awake, when your
mind is clear and calm, before it jumps into the busy-ness of the day ahead, pause in the stillness. In this pause, consider the rebirth of the new day that is dawning. This is your golden opportunity to set the
intention for your day. Feel the feelings of peace and contentment that you wish to embody throughout this day. Allow those feelings to flow out from you to meet the people, situations, and circumstances you will
encounter in this new day.
Resolve to return to the calm and peaceful place in your mind as often as you need to in order to act and respond from that wise and deliberate consciousness. At the end of the
day, before you fall asleep, notice how you feel as you reflect on your day. This is not a time to remind yourself of where you failed. It is a time to congratulate yourself on each moment of rebirth. Be happy for each
moment you choose the kinder response or the softer judgment. It is not about getting it perfect. It is about the practice of noticing. After all, tomorrow will dawn a new day with new opportunities for rebirth.
