There's a story of a reporter at a baseball
umpires' convention. The reporter is interviewing various umpires about how they make split-second decisions in hotly contested games. What pressure they are under to make the call! The reporter was
especially interested in how these umpires call balls and strikes when the baseball travels at nearly a 100 miles an hour and just cuts the corner of the plate. He asked one umpire how he could make such a snap
decision. The umpire replied, "Well, son, there's balls and there's strikes, and I calls them the way I sees them."
The reporter thanked him and caught up with another famous umpire. He asked him
the same question. This umpire said, "There's balls and there's strikes, and I calls them the way they are."
Pursuing another old-time umpire, the reporter received this answer, "There's balls and
there's strikes, but they ain't nothing till I call them!"
Till I call them: Our choices determine our lives. What kind of an "umpire" am I? How do I make the calls? What kind of
self-talk do I use? What do I call myself? Failure? Stupid? Weak? Growing? Forgiving? Overcomer? What do I call other people? Situations? Work?
Family? The day of judgment is every day of our lives, because we must choose the quality and nature of our thoughts - every single day and minute therein.
This week, let us use our best wisdom and good judgment
to choose what is worthwhile, helpful, healthy, positive, and for the highest good of all concerned.
