Why Study the Tao? "We shape our world by the thoughts we hold in our minds." This is a
classic Unity philosophy. Dr. David Hawkins, author of Power vs. Force, the Hidden Determinants of Human Behavior, writes that only 3% of the
population advances its consciousness in a lifetime. The vast majority of people live out their lives based on the inherited consciousness of their
family, schools, churches, country, and intimate social circles. The 3% who advance in consciousness are willing to take a look at people,
processes, cultures, traditions, religions, philosophies, and societies that differ from what they know. They seek and embrace education,
information, and comparison of a diverse spectrum of life examples. What exactly is the Tao? Alan Watts, in his book Tao: The Watercourse Way,
offers this definition of what the Tao is: Taoism is "the way of man's cooperation with the course or trend of the natural world." The Tao does
not rely on any form of divine revelation. It is available to anyone and everyone who is willing to tune into the
natural world around them. It is a way of living life that is simple and deliberate. Due to technology, our global world has become very small and intimate. We can no
longer afford to live with closed, narrow minds that arrogantly shout, "We have the only way to God or understanding of the universe." Strategies of control, isolation, and
oppression will not work as our global society becomes more inter-connected. It is common today for us to invite total strangers into our homes through the internet and
social media. We must tolerant and respect other faith traditions, with the possibility of understanding. Those who used to be unlike us are now becoming one with us.
There are many paths to God, and we celebrate the diversity. We open our minds and hearts to the Tao Te Ching and find greater clarity and understanding of the life around us
and a deeper level of the commonality of humanity. Let us celebrate a shared quest to know the Ultimate Reality, that which we are comfortable calling God.
